Are you moving house soon and are concerned about how your pet will feel? Our pets feel the stress of moving too, so here are a few tips for moving house with pets.
Cats especially can feel stressed when the house is in turmoil so try to keep the main areas of your house organised and, if possible, move fully packed boxes into a secure garage. If they have a favourite spot to sleep in, try to leave this area clear.
A Feliway plug in could help your pets feel more calm. I have had a positive experience with the Feliway Friends plug in with helping my cat feel less stressed after the arrival of a new baby in the house.
On Moving day, ask a friend or family member to look after your dog or small animal and lock your cat in one room, making sure they have a litter tray, food, water and somewhere nice to sleep. Make sure you empty the room of furniture and boxes beforehand and that you tell your house removal team which room the cat is in. The last thing you want is for the cat to go off for a quiet wander when you need to lock up and leave the house. Allocate one family member the job of checking on your pet throughout the day, to make sure they are ok and to calm their nerves.
Once you’re in the new home, let your cat have some space in one of the rooms, again with their food, water, litter try and a bed. Make sure you let your removals team know which room the cat is safely stowed away in.
Once you have moved, remember to change your address at the vets and also to register your new address with the microchip company. It would also be a good idea to get a tag on a collar engraved with your new address, as you pet will feel pretty disorientated with their new surroundings.
Ideally, you would use your removals company to pack your belongings, as this makes the process much quicker and means your house isn’t in turmoil for long periods of time.
